While the Taiwanese film of the same name, ‘The Secret That Cannot Be Told’, is receiving much love and forming a solid fan base, actors Do Kyung-soo, Won Jin-ah, and Shin Ye-eun have created a Korean version of ‘The Secret That Cannot Be Told’ in Korea. ‘The Secret That Cannot Be Told’, which will capture the hearts of not only fans of the original but also those who have not seen the original, will be hitting theaters during the Lunar New Year holidays.
On the afternoon of the 14th, a press conference for the film ‘The Secret That Cannot Be Told’ was held at Megabox COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Actors Do Kyung-soo, Won Jin-ah, Shin Ye-eun, and director Seo Yoo-min attended the press conference that day.
Doh Kyung-soo was the first to say, “I chose the original ‘The Secret That Cannot Be Told’ because I liked it so much. Yoo-joon is a pianist, but I can‘t play the piano. “I chose this work because I get to act as Yoo-jun playing the piano, and because I’ve never done a melodrama before, but I wanted to do one,” she said of her reason for choosing “Secret That Can‘t Be Told.”
Won Jin-ah continued, “I was a fan of the original work, so I was a bit scared. Since the movie has such a solid fan base, I worried a lot about whether it was the right challenge. There are many cases where the subject matter of melodrama is introduced as a single category, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to take on a role that focuses on love and being loved, so I participated without hesitation.”
Director Seo Yoo-min said about differentiating it from the original work, “I worried because I knew the ending of the original work. However, I made it based on that premise because there will be people who don’t know about it. I tried to add points that are fun even for people who already know. I added new processes that make people curious about the identity, have doubts, and then have it revealed in the end. I wanted to have that kind of tension and bring out the melodramatic line,” he explained.
Do Kyung-soo then recalled the filming of ‘Secret That Cannot Be Told’ and said, “We had such great chemistry. There were almost no NGs during filming, and we filmed well with great chemistry. What I was worried about was that since this is a melodrama, I was worried that the line, ‘I play for you’, might sound a little cringey, but I acted while worrying. Fortunately, I talked a lot with the director. I worried a lot about that while delivering the line, but I feel like I expressed it well, so I feel a lot of relief.”
When asked about his concerns about the gap between the original Taiwanese film of the same name, ‘Secret That Cannot Be Told’, which was released 20 years ago, Director Seo Yoo-min said, “That was the most worrisome. It’s a film that’s so famous for its emotional appeal. But since we‘re also dealing with the present of Korea, I thought we could show you its own fun and emotions that you can feel now. I’m really curious to see if it came across well.”
Do Kyung-soo said about the process of capturing the character, “I didn‘t feel burdened by capturing the character. I thought hard that I could express it with my current emotions. But what I was worried about was the piano. I really can’t play the piano at all and I can‘t read sheet music. I thought about how much practice I would have to do to get to this level. However, my goal was to practice the short part hard so that the viewers would think that the character Yoo-joon was really playing the piano.” He explained, “And I practiced and tried hard to express the body movements and expressions that pianists use when playing the piano.”
Shin Ye-eun then said about preparing for the process of playing the violin in the drama, “I’m familiar with instruments, so I didn‘t feel any resistance. I was confident in holding the bow. There are many people around me who play music, so I asked them to watch me play on the day of filming. In fact, when we filmed the orchestra scene, everyone there was a major. They helped me out at that time, and I received separate lessons from a nearby music teacher and made it like that,” he said, drawing attention.
Director Seo Yoo-min said about the reason he cast the actors in ‘Secret That Cannot Be Told’, “The first person that came to mind was Do Kyung-soo. The atmosphere is romantic and his voice is cool. When you give a scenario, you often get rejected, and there are many cases where you don’t get the actor you originally thought of, but he liked it at first, so I wondered if such a miracle could happen. When I just read the scenario, there were parts that I was worried about. But when I talked to actor Do Kyung-soo, he already knew how to change those lines so naturally. That’s why he was trustworthy and good when we worked together.”
He continued, “I had a lot of concerns about the role of Jung-ah, but I met actress Won Jin-ah through a recommendation. We talked a lot when we first met. From the moment I first met her, I thought of her as a friend. I thought, ’Jung-ah would be that kind of person.‘ When I saw actress Won Jin-ah, I thought of Jung-ah, so I decided to work with her,” he added.
Meanwhile, ’Secret That Cannot Be Told‘ is a fantasy romance film that contains a miraculous magical moment that begins when Yoo-joon (played by Do Kyung-soo) and Jung-ah (played by Won Jin-ah) accidentally meet in a campus practice room where the secret of time is hidden. It will be released on the 28th.
