The original musical ‘Empress Myeongseong’, which premiered in 1995, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The musical ‘Empress Myeongseong’, which depicts the life of Empress Myeongseong, the wife of the 26th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Gojong, and the center of the conflicts of the times, is based on the novel ‘Fox Hunt’ by Lee Mun-yeol.

Kim So-hyun, Shin Young-sook, and Cha Ji-yeon have been cast as Empress Myeongseong, who becomes the mother of a country at the age of 16 and remains steadfastly by Gojong‘s side, but meets a vain death in the operation called ‘Fox Hunt’.

Kang Pil-seok, Son Jun-ho, and Kim Joo-tak star as the 26th king of Joseon, King Gojong, an ill-fated monarch who faces an era of chaos due to the ambitions of the Western powers and the confused public sentiment. Yang Jun-mo, Park Min-seong, and Baek Hyung-hoon were cast as Hong Gye-hoon, a Joseon Dynasty warrior and bodyguard who protected Empress Myeongseong until the end during the Eulmi Incident.

The musical captivated the hearts of audiences with over 50 songs completed by the duo of composer Kim Hee-gap and lyricist Yang In-ja, masters of the Korean music industry.

The musical ‘Empress Myeongseong’, which contains Korean sentiment and magnificent melodies, was the first Korean original musical to enter Broadway in New York in 1997 and received international attention. Since then, it has been performed in major cities around the world, including LA, London, and Toronto, raising the status of Korean original musicals.

Meanwhile, ‘Empress Myeongseong’ has been recognized by audiences as a living legend of Korean original musicals, setting new records such as surpassing 1 million cumulative domestic viewers in 2007 and becoming the first Korean original musical to achieve 1,000 performances in 2009.
